Show Notes

For more than 20 years, Dr. Naomi Rose has been a leader of domestic and international efforts to publicize and address the many problems associated with the capture and captivity of marine mammals for public display.

In this episode we discuss the current status of marine mammals in captivity in the U.S.

She shares how she worked with industry and government to create a law in California that ended the entertainment and breeding of orcas that are already living in captivity.

We also discuss the Russian Whale Jail - where orca and beluga were illegally taken to be sold to the Chinese entertainment market.

She leads an international effort to end captivity in China, Russia, and other countries around the world as the marine mammal scientist for the Animal Welfare Institute.

She mentions a ton of resources in this episode - see below for all of them.

We want to highlight the newest edition of her white paper  The Case Against Marine Mammals in Captivity - go ahead and download it here!

Here are letters from Scientists and Celebrities who are raising their voices against the illegal capture of orcas and belugas now housed in the “whale jail” in Russia.
